Vienna-Schwechat, June 30, 2026
The Eastern Office recorded a total of 5,003 seizures at Vienna-Schwechat Airport in 2025, according to a press briefing on Tuesday by State Secretary Barbara Eibinger-Miedl (ÖVP) and customs office director Anita Csenar.
The customs officers of the Eastern Office, most of whom are deployed at the airport, inspected 34,091 travelers and confiscated a wide range of prohibited or smuggled goods. According to Eibinger-Miedl, the approximately 280 staff members—220 of them at the airport—make an important contribution to fair competition, the protection of domestic jobs, and, not least, to public health.
Narcotic drugs and pharmaceuticals
In the area of narcotic drugs, the Eastern Office recorded 104 seizures. According to the Ministry of Finance, more than 191 kilograms of cannabis, 17.6 kilograms of new psychoactive substances, and more than eleven kilograms of psychotropic substances were confiscated. Seizures of narcotic drugs, particularly cannabis, rose by 50 percent compared to the previous year, and those of pharmaceuticals by as much as 100 percent.
