Accident site and background

The B25 is one of the important connections through the district of Scheibbs and runs through several small localities, including Lunz am See and the nearby Grubberg. The road is heavily used in the region both by commuters and by recreational cyclists and motorcyclists.

Local residents and day-trippers frequently use the route around Lunz am See in summer for cycling tours, as the area on the edge of the Ybbstal Alps is scenically attractive. Accidents between cyclists and motorized road users are, according to local observers, not uncommon in this season.

Police investigations

Police announced that they would initiate investigations into the exact sequence of the collision. The aim is to clarify how the collision could have occurred and whether questions of speed, visibility, or right-of-way played a role.

The Christophorus rescue helicopter is a regularly used air rescue asset in Lower Austria's rescue services and, according to the Ministry of the Interior, covers the entire federal state together with other bases. The operation site on the B25 lies within the catchment area of several bases.

Rescue chain and clinic

The Amstetten State Clinic, to which the injured person was taken, belongs to the Lower Austria State Health Agency and is one of the key hospitals in the Mostviertel region. It has a surgical department and an emergency room where seriously injured patients can be cared for around the clock.

The Lower Austria State Police Directorate pointed out once again in the release that the investigations are ongoing. Further findings on the circumstances of the accident and the health condition of the cyclist would be communicated as part of the investigations, it was said.

According to information received, police will also question possible witnesses to the incident. Traces on the vehicles and at the accident site, as well as any dashcam recordings, could be included in the evaluation, according to police.

Impact on the region

Administratively, the accident site belongs to the district of Scheibbs, but further processing and any follow-up measures could also involve neighboring offices, such as those from the district of St. Pölten, since traffic connections are coordinated across district boundaries.

The case is now also occupying the security authorities with a view to the coming weeks, during which many sport cyclists and training groups are traditionally on the roads in the Mostviertel region.
