Since the beginning of May, 4,173 confirmed infections with the Cyclospora parasite have been recorded in the US, the US health authority CDC announced on Tuesday (local time).

The US health authority CDC recorded confirmed cases from 41 states. More than 7,400 additional cases were under investigation, it said. According to the figures, infected individuals have so far been treated in hospital. No deaths have been reported so far: "No one has died from the disease yet."

The official notice went out on July 14, about two weeks after Michigan reported a major nationwide outbreak. As Felicitas Erzinger, science editor, notes, experts on the ground say the US health authority CDC warned too late.
