Washington, 03 August 2026
US health authorities have confirmed the first deaths of the 2026 season linked to cyclosporiasis, a foodborne intestinal illness that the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says typically spreads through contaminated fresh produce between May and August.
What is cyclosporiasis and how does it spread?
Cyclosporiasis is caused by the parasite Cyclospora, which is most often transmitted when people eat raw fruits or vegetables that have been contaminated with infected fecal matter. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cases are known to rise during spring and summer months in the US, with a typical season running from the start of May through the end of August. The illness can cause prolonged watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps, bloating and fatigue, and can last for weeks if untreated.
