The parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis is spreading in the United States and has infected hundreds of people in 31 states, with more than 1,500 cases registered in Michigan alone.

What is Cyclospora?

In the United States, the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis is currently causing a wave of illness. According to the central health authority CDC, case numbers this year are above the usual seasonal level. "While case numbers generally rise in the spring and summer months, the numbers this year are, according to the CDC, above the usual level."

An infection with cyclosporiasis is usually not fatal, but can quickly lead to dehydration, US authorities warn. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is monitoring the outbreak closely.
