Frankfurt, 11 June 2026

The Czech Republic will be the guest of honour at the 78th Frankfurt Book Fair from 7 to 11 October, presenting itself under the deliberately puzzling motto "A Country on the Coast" and bringing roughly 75 authors to Frankfurt.

The Czech guest-of-honour programme was unveiled at the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek in Frankfurt. Organisers said the title is intentionally meant to cause confusion: the landlocked Czech Republic has no coastline, but the motto plays on a line from Shakespeare's "The Winter's Tale," in which Bohemia is in fact set by the sea. Frankfurt Book Fair director Juergen Boos read the motto as describing "eine Küste, an der Sprache, Geschichten und Ideen anlanden" — a coast where language, stories and ideas land. The 2026 fair will be Boos's last at the helm of the event.
