Several German rivers, including the Rhine, Elbe, and Danube, are currently suffering from severe low water levels, as a result of which inland shipping can take on less cargo and must brace for rising transport costs.

According to the Bundesanstalt für Gewässerkunde (BfG), the lowest water level ever recorded has also been measured on the Danube in recent days. The authority does not expect any sustained improvement in the situation in the coming weeks. The Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) has likewise confirmed low water levels at numerous gauges along the Rhine. On Wednesday, the water level of the Elbe at the Dresden gauge stood at 59 centimeters — nearly 90 centimeters below the average.
