The German benchmark index DAX has started the new trading week with losses, as investors keep a close eye on the upcoming interest rate decision by the European Central Bank and the escalation of the Iran conflict.
Last Friday, the DAX had already closed 0.34 percent lower at 24,830.98 points. On Monday, it continued its downward trend in early trading, falling 0.2 percent to 24,791 points. The benchmark index has thus shed a significant portion of its record high of 25,817.89 points reached on July 6, when it had set new records on three consecutive trading days.
Market analyst Timo Emden described the mood with an image: "Die Märkte navigieren derzeit zwischen Unternehmenszahlen und geopolitischen Schlagzeilen, aber am Steuer sitzt der Nahost-Konflikt". Deka Bank chief economist Ulrich Kater also sees little clear movement: "Klare Marktbewegungen sind kaum zu erwarten, es bleibt zäh".
