A 55-year-old worker was killed on Wednesday when a trench collapsed in Kapfenberg, while a second worker suffered severe injuries, as confirmed by the Styrian State Police Directorate.
Incident Details
Two construction workers were engaged in excavation work on Wednesday in the Lastenstraße area near the freight station in Kapfenberg when the ground suddenly gave way. The 55-year-old worker was buried under the debris and sustained fatal injuries. Resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful.
The second worker, a 57-year-old, was rescued but suffered serious injuries. A rescue helicopter transported him to Graz University Hospital, where he is receiving intensive care. The exact circumstances of the collapse remain under investigation.
Rescue Operation and Aftermath
Emergency responders, including Red Cross teams, quickly arrived at the scene to recover the trapped workers. Despite immediate resuscitation efforts, the 55-year-old could not be saved. The rescue operation was complicated by unstable ground conditions.
