Death of a 42-year-old Moroccan during police operation in Bologna triggers protests

Trigger and sequence of the operation

The case evokes memories of the death of George Floyd, the African American killed in May 2020 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, by white officers during a police operation. In Bologna too, people took to the streets in the days that followed. Protests took place in several Italian cities, where placards bore slogans such as "Truth and Justice". In Bologna, the situation escalated: 64 officers sustained injuries resulting in three to 35 days of incapacitation.

Giorgia Meloni spoke out on Tuesday on the platform X, demanding a thorough investigation: "Die Wahrheit muss gründlich ermittelt werden, ohne Vorurteile und ohne Nachsicht gegenüber irgendjemandem". Matteo Piantedosi made similar remarks.

Political reactions

The deceased's sister, quoted in Italian media reports under the name "Fakir's sister," told the newspaper "Corriere della Sera": "Ich werde erst Frieden finden, wenn meinem Bruder Gerechtigkeit widerfahren ist." Senator Ilaria Cucchi of the Greens denounced an "inhumane act" and accused the government of fostering "hatred and racism."

A spokesperson for the investigating authorities pointed to a fundamental rule of law principle in an interview with the daily "Il Messaggero": "So wie jeder Bürger das Recht auf die Unschuldsvermutung hat, muss derselbe Grundsatz auch für diejenigen gelten, die eine Uniform tragen." The statement appeared intended to make clear that the ongoing investigation neither presumes guilt nor exonerates the officers involved from the outset.

The circumstances of the death have not yet been conclusively clarified. Critics accuse the police of failing to protect the man adequately. "Wenn jemand aufgebracht ist, muss man ihn beruhigen, nicht der brütenden Hitze aussetzen und töten," media quoted a commentary on the case. The prosecutor's office announced it would swiftly advance the investigation and emphasized its intention to evaluate all evidence, including body camera footage and autopsy results.

Protests in several cities

Italy has been discussing the consequences for days. While conservative politicians are calling for restraint and stressing the presumption of innocence, parts of the opposition are demanding a thorough investigation and see the incident as a sign of a broader problem in how security forces treat migrants. The European Union and international observers are also following the case closely, as it could shape Italy's image regarding police violence.

The residents of Pilastro are in shock. Many of them knew the man, who had lived in the estate for years. In the days after his death, local initiatives organized vigils and called for an independent investigation commission. Human rights organizations, including Amnesty Italia, also spoke up and offered legal support to the deceased's family.

Alongside the demonstrations in Bologna, smaller rallies took place in Milan, Rome and other cities. Police reported isolated acts of property damage, but no major riots. The government announced it would continue to monitor the security situation over the coming days and would speak at the appropriate time. Until then, the open questions about the exact sequence of the police operation and the cause of death of the 42-year-old remain unanswered.
