The BKK Dachverband der Betriebskrankenkassen has determined in a new evaluation that above all long and serious illnesses are driving up the expenditures of statutory health insurance (GKV), while the black-red coalition is simultaneously arguing over the planned abolition of the telephone sick note (Telefon-AU).

Long-Term Illnesses Dominate Expenditures

Board member Anne-Kathrin Klemm of the BKK Dachverband explained that it is not colds, but prolonged ailments that are the true cost drivers. In her exact words she said: „Nicht kurze Erkältungen, sondern lange schwere Krankheiten sind die großen Kostentreiber für gesetzliche Krankenversicherungen." Specifically, she cited musculoskeletal disorders and mental health conditions. These lasted on average more than five weeks, even though mental health diagnoses accounted for only 5.4 percent of all sick notes – with a rising trend.
