The German federal government under Friedrich Merz intends to require employees to submit a medical certificate of incapacity to work from the first day of illness in the future, in order to curb the rising sick leave rates seen since the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to information from STANDARD, the government in Berlin is considering a corresponding draft law that would replace the current regulation requiring a sick note only after three days. The goal is to reduce so-called short-term sick leaves and to strengthen the competitiveness of the German economy. Business associations had repeatedly pointed to the high levels of absenteeism in recent months.
