Deputy Mayor Florian Kreibich resigns in Salzburg and forgoes 2029 election

Departure with a Clear Announcement

The step was justified with substantive differences within his own party. In recent months, Kreibich had come under increasing pressure within the Salzburg ÖVP because of his consensus-oriented course toward the SPÖ-led city government. He himself emphasized that his political self-image was a different one: „Kleinpolitisches, kleinkariertes Geplänkel war nie mein Ding. Ich bin immer gestanden für eine zielorientierte Sachpolitik.“

ÖVP State Secretary and city party chairman Nikolaus Stampfer stated that a fundamental agreement with Kreibich no longer existed. At the same time, he paid tribute to the Deputy Mayor's decision as an „ehrlichen Schritt“. This wording suggests that the party leadership had apparently expected Kreibich's resignation without openly demanding it.

Reactions from Party and State

The Governor of Salzburg, Karoline Edtstadler, also commented on the change. She acknowledged disagreements over the course of the city ÖVP: „Es ist kein Geheimnis, dass es zuletzt Auffassungsunterschiede über den Kurs der Stadt-ÖVP gab.“ At the same time, she announced a programmatic realignment: Her goal was „die Salzburger Volkspartei jünger, weiblicher und schlagkräftiger zu machen“.

Edtstadler also thanked the outgoing Deputy Mayor for an orderly transition: „Ich danke Florian Kreibich aber für die reibungslose und zeitgerechte Übergabe.“ Connected with this is the expectation that the agendas in Kreibich's two departments can be reassigned within a few weeks, without ongoing projects coming to a standstill.

It is currently unclear who will succeed him in the two departments and in the office of Deputy Mayor. The city party intends to consult with the city council faction on Monday about the next steps. With the simultaneously announced personnel and substantive renewal of the Salzburg People's Party, it is becoming apparent that Edtstadler also wants to use the Kreibich matter as a starting point for a broader restructuring.

Outlook on the Succession

The resignation comes at a time when the Salzburg ÖVP is readjusting its approach to the SPÖ majority in city hall. Kreibich's consensus-oriented style was considered internally to be no longer capable of securing a majority; with his departure, the conflict between substantive politics and an opposition course is being resolved in favor of a more combative public posture by the city ÖVP.

Political observers regard the step as a logical consequence of months of intra-party tension. The fact that Kreibich chose the timing himself and linked it with his withdrawal from the 2029 candidacy is interpreted as an attempt to stage his own departure not as a defeat but as a deliberate decision.

The coming days will show whether the consultations announced for Monday will quickly lead to a successor. Until then, both departments will remain under Kreibich's responsibility, thereby ensuring an orderly transition – and not an abrupt change of power.
