Didier Deschamps has equaled and surpassed the 48-year-old record of Helmut Schön with his 26th match as head coach at a World Cup. The Frenchman is only the fourth coach to have won the World Cup double as both a player and a coach.
France head coach Didier Deschamps overtook the 48-year-old record of Helmut Schön as the coach with the most World Cup matches in the semifinal against Spain at the Dallas stadium.
By reaching his 26th match as head coach at a World Cup, the 57-year-old moved past the former German national team coach. Helmut Schön, whose last appearance came 48 years ago at the 1978 World Cup, had stood at the top of this statistic for 48 years. The mark was considered by experts to be one of the longest-standing records in international football. Included in Deschamps' 26 World Cup matches is the group game against Norway. FIFA nonetheless lists the match (4:1) in Deschamps' official World Cup statistics. However, the Frenchman was not on the touchline for that match, having flown home following the death of his mother.
