Deutsche Bahn reports first half-year profit in seven years

Economic turnaround with question marks

Observers see the profit primarily as a signal that DB – despite heavy burdens such as increased energy and personnel costs – is once again able to generate a positive operating result. Regardless of the welcome financial news, train punctuality remains the dominant topic in public perception. The reasons for the ongoing delays are considered to be the partly dilapidated rail network, the resulting construction sites, and the overloading of junction stations. These factors had repeatedly led in recent years to punctuality rates that were significantly below target levels.

Bilger's statement illustrates the balancing act facing the ministry: on the one hand, policymakers insist on better services for passengers; on the other, the minister acknowledges that demands cannot be arbitrarily imposed. Cooperation with DB should therefore be the focus in order to improve punctuality "faster."

Investments in the rail network, better utilization of junction stations, and more reliable construction site planning are seen as central levers. The half-year profit gives the DB CEO at least short-term argumentative tailwind.

Recent years have shown how quickly positive partial results can be eroded again by rising costs or additional burdens. Passenger associations rate the half-year figures cautiously positive. A profit is economically a good sign, but cannot disguise the sometimes considerable quality problems in daily operations. It will be crucial whether investments in the network actually reach travelers – for example, in the form of more punctual trains and more stable connections.
