Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD) has spoken out in favor of introducing a mandatory occupational pension modeled on the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) on the ARD program "Arena."

Speaking on the show on Sunday evening, Klingbeil advocated making the German pension system future-proof with a combination of a strengthened statutory pension, mandatory occupational pensions, and the expansion of private old-age provision. However, the statutory pension must continue to be the foundation "for everything," said the SPD chairman. A mandatory occupational pension could help stabilize the pension system in Germany.

The federal government also wants to create incentives so that citizens provide more for their old age themselves.
