Background: The DGB's Demand

Backing from the Union

Support for the DGB initiative is also coming from the employees' wing of the CDU/CSU. CDA chairman Dennis Radtke described the proposal as the right step. There are already functioning models in the chemical industry and other collective bargaining sectors that could safely be opened up to others, said Radtke. This suggests a majority beyond coalition lines that is open to the project.

Klingbeil sees the economy as the central lever for the upcoming pension reform. The economy is at the center of the upcoming pension deliberations and reforms because more growth ultimately also creates more employment, he explained. Reliable old-age security is therefore directly linked to economic development.

Economy and Pension Commission

The Federal Finance Minister also expressed confidence that the pension system could be kept stable through his government's reforms. "Auch das würde helfen," said Klingbeil with a view to the mandatory occupational pension. He announced that the coalition would use the proposals of a pension commission as the basis for new political course-setting.

The pension commission's proposals were presented in the current month. They form the starting point for the deliberations in the coalition committee. Observers expect the issue of occupational pensions to be one of the most controversial points in the upcoming negotiations. In addition to the SPD and parts of the Union, employer associations are also positioning themselves in the ongoing debate.
