The black-green federal government plans to expand the state administrative app ID Austria with an AI-powered personal assistant designed to support citizens in their digital government dealings.

The expansion of the ID Austria app is controversial in political debate. Supporters see it as an important step toward a citizen-friendly and efficient administration. Critics, however, warn of an intrusion into informational self-determination and of new dependencies on large technology corporations. The discussion thus moves at the intersection of digitalization, bureaucracy reduction, and data protection.

According to Alexander Pröll, the goal is that in the future all ID Austria users will be able to optionally use a personal "Public AI Agent." This agent is intended to guide them through digital administrative services. The function is to remain voluntary and will not become a prerequisite for government transactions. With this, the government is responding to the complexity of many online forms that have caused many people to fail in the past.
