The German government's Finance Agency has rejected the exchange offer from Italy's major bank UniCredit for Commerzbank just days before the deadline expires and has expressly backed the Frankfurt lender's strategy of independence.
The German government's Finance Agency has weighed in on the dispute between Commerzbank and UniCredit over the Italian bank's takeover offer. It rejects UniCredit's share-exchange offer, the authority announced. The offer is out of the question on economic grounds alone, because it does not provide an adequate premium.
In addition, the interministerial steering committee supports Commerzbank's strategy of independence and rejects UniCredit's "aggressive Vorgehen". With this positioning, the German federal government is clearly taking a stance against the takeover attempt from Italy and is backing the Frankfurt institution.
