District Heating in Western Vienna: Supply Fully Restored After Repairs

The work was already completed on Saturday evening. After the approximately 3.2-kilometer-long pipeline was filled during the night leading into Sunday, all approximately 140 building stations were put back into operation on Sunday morning. According to Wiener Netze, all affected households have been fully supplied with hot water again since Sunday afternoon.

During the outage, which lasted around four days, the emergency services had set up an extensive substitute supply. Substitute shower facilities were organized at sports clubs and in shower containers for the approximately 140 affected building connections. A total of around 300 people used the offer.

Substitute Supply and Support for Those Affected

Particular support was provided to people with limited mobility. As the operators stated, "für ältere Menschen und Menschen mit Behinderungen gab es einen Fahrdienst zu barrierefreien Duschen". This was intended to ensure that even people who could not easily go to the substitute locations had access to warm water for showering.

The supply of Klinik Ottakring and Hanusch Hospital was ensured continuously throughout the work. This meant that the operation of the two hospitals, which are directly connected to the pipeline, was guaranteed at all times. The hospital will be modernized until 2040.

The construction work itself was carried out in shift operation. The round-the-clock shift operation of employees since Thursday morning was aimed at keeping the disruption for residents as short as possible. At the same time, the technical requirements for the pipeline, which has formed the backbone of western Vienna's district heating supply since the 1960s, had to be met.

Value Cards for the Vienna Baths

In addition to the shower containers and sports club locations, Wien Energie issued value cards for the Vienna baths – these can still be redeemed until June 30. This allowed affected households to fall back on public baths during the hot days that prevailed in Vienna this week.

The Flötzersteig waste incineration plant itself, which serves as the heat source for the pipeline, is Austria's oldest thermal waste utilization plant. With this year's revision and the renewal of plant components over several kilometers of pipeline sections, supply security is to be increased in the coming years.

The overall situation had shown how vulnerable a central infrastructure pipeline is during extensive revision work, it was said from circles of Wiener Netze. At the same time, it had been possible to significantly cushion the impact on the population through close coordination with the city, hospitals, and sports clubs.
