The Deutsche Lebens-Rettungs-Gesellschaft (DLRG) counted at least 99 dead swimmers in German waters in June – the highest June figure since the heat summer of 2003.
Record high since the heat summer of 2003
In the past month with its extreme heat wave, more people drowned nationwide than in any June in more than 20 years. The Deutsche Lebens-Rettungs-Gesellschaft (DLRG) spoke on Saturday of at least 99 deaths. The previous comparative figure from the heat summer of 2003, when 107 people had accidents in June, was only narrowly missed.
DLRG President Ute Vogt expressed concern about the start of the bathing season. "Der tragische Start in die Badesaison gibt Anlass zur Sorge, dass bei weiteren Hitzewellen im Hochsommer erneut viele Menschen ihr Leben im Wasser verlieren könnten", she said. According to the DLRG, most accidents occurred in lakes and rivers; fewer people died in swimming pools, canals, and the sea.
Men particularly affected
The distribution of victims by gender is particularly striking. "Über 90 Prozent der Todesopfer im Juni waren männlich; unter den jungen Leuten sogar alle", said Vogt. This confirms a trend the DLRG has long observed: men make up by far the largest share of drowning victims.
