An analysis by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) concludes that battery-electric vehicles are already cheaper than petrol cars to drive in Europe, while purchase costs in the three largest vehicle segments in 2025 were approximately on par with combustion engines.
The ICCT report evaluates the entire life cycle of battery-electric vehicles and compares the costs with petrol cars. The focus is on expenses for energy, maintenance, and purchase. The study shows that the cost situation for e-cars in Europe has changed significantly in recent years.
Marie Rajon Bernard, senior researcher and lead author of the report, stated: "Ich gehe davon aus, dass die Verbreitung von batterieelektrischen Fahrzeugen in ganz Europa in den kommenden Jahren zunehmen wird, sofern die derzeitige Politik beibehalten wird." She thus points to the political framework that has so far supported the market ramp-up.
