Used electric cars have reached price parity with comparable combustion engine vehicles and are experiencing an unprecedented boom in supply, according to an analysis by the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (ISI).
In the first four months of this year, nearly 120,000 used electric vehicles changed hands nationwide, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority – almost double the number in the same period in 2025 and almost three times as many as from January to April 2024.
"The market has developed at a remarkable pace from a niche segment to an established market with growing supply, transparent prices, and reliable quality standards," says Patrick Plötz from Fraunhofer ISI.
The high number of new registrations in 2020 and 2021, primarily from fleet and leasing stocks, is now leading to a substantial increase in supply. "Typical usage cycles are three to four years," explains Plötz.
