Tropical medicine specialist Martin Grobusch expects the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo to last into next year.

Grobusch, who heads the Center for Tropical and Travel Medicine at the University of Amsterdam, commented on Monday on the duration of the outbreak, which has been known since mid-May. "Finding nearly all contacts will ultimately make the difference in getting the outbreak under control," he said. The outbreak is particularly difficult to contain because there is neither a vaccine nor a specific therapy for the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus.

According to the latest figures from the Congolese government, 702 people have died from the virus, and 318 are considered to have recovered. Most recently, 1,926 cases had been confirmed in the laboratory. The number of identified contacts who are at risk of having been infected through contact is currently estimated at around 90 percent, according to Grobusch.
