Ebola Outbreak in the Congo: 1,307 Confirmed Cases and Political Tensions

Ebola fever, caused by the pathogen, is a contagious and life-threatening infectious disease. It is transmitted through physical contact and contact with bodily fluids. For the currently rampant "Bundibugyo" strain of the virus, there is currently neither a vaccine nor an approved therapy. According to experts, the Bundibugyo virus circulated undetected for months before the outbreak was officially declared on May 15.

The Pathogen and Its Particularities

Prior to this year, Bundibugyo had caused only two recognized outbreaks since its identification in Uganda in 2007, with a total of just 193 confirmed cases. According to doctors, earlier Bundibugyo outbreaks had lower reported fatality rates than epidemics caused by the more widespread Zaire and Sudan strains. However, medical professionals stress that it is still too early to know whether the current epidemic will follow the same pattern, as hundreds of patients remain hospitalized.

To prevent further spread of the epidemic, the government has banned public gatherings in four provinces – including in the capital Kinshasa, where no cases have been recorded so far. A spokesperson for the opposition alliance Lamuka stated that the demonstration would nevertheless take place. The opposition, however, criticizes the ban as politically motivated. It accuses the government of using it to prevent a demonstration planned for July 8 in Kinshasa.

Political Tensions over the Gathering Ban

The protest is directed against a constitutional reform that could allow President Felix Tshisekedi a third term in office. An earlier rally on June 12 was forcibly dispersed by police. This is sharpening the political situation amid an already difficult health crisis.

Despite the rising case numbers, there are also positive signs from the treatment centers. The number of recoveries reported by the health authorities of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has nearly doubled within a week: it rose to 148 on Thursday, after standing at 80 on June 18 – even though the treatment centers are taking in dozens of patients daily. Work of Aid Organizations on the Ground

Theresa Berchthold, project coordinator for "Doctors Without Borders" in Beni in eastern Congo, explains in an interview with SWR Aktuell host Ralf Hecht what concrete measures look like on the ground: "Etwa indem ein Kompromiss gefunden wird zwischen konsequenter Isolierung der Erkrankten und der Möglichkeit, dass ihre Familie und Freunde sie trotzdem sehen und ihnen Dinge mitbringen können." In this way, the attempt is made to reconcile medical necessity with human needs.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has already experienced several Ebola outbreaks. Three provinces in the east of the country are particularly affected by the outbreak. The international community and aid organizations are active on the ground to contain the spread and ensure medical care.
