The Democratic Republic of Congo is reporting, according to its own figures, a sharp increase in confirmed Ebola cases to nearly 600, while the death toll has risen to 115 and the outbreak continues to spread in three conflict-affected provinces.

The number of infections with the Bundibugyo strain of the virus has risen to 598, the government announced on Tuesday. According to government figures, the total number of confirmed infection cases is therefore 550.

115 people have died from the disease, government sources said. In an earlier interim tally, the number of Ebola deaths had still been given as 101. Against this, there is one piece of positive news: 22 patients have recovered, the authorities stated.
