Austria's Education Minister Markus Wallner has described moving the summer holidays forward into August as difficult and pointed to all of the federal states.

In a response to the current heat discussion, Wallner explained that moving the summer holidays earlier would only make sense if it happened simultaneously in all federal states. "Eine Vorverlegung sei aber nur sinnvoll, wenn sie in allen Bundesländern passiert", said the Education Minister. In doing so, he pointed to the federal structure of the school system, in which the states jointly set the holiday calendar.

The impetus for the debate had previously been given by Vienna's Education City Councillor Christoph Wiederkehr and Vorarlberg's school official Bettina Emmerling. They argue that August nights are cooler than nights in June and July, and that school buildings can be better ventilated and cooled in late summer than at the previous midsummer holiday point.
