Berlin, 10 June 2026
The German-French combat aircraft project FCAS has finally failed after almost ten years of development, according to a report broadcast on 10 June 2026 by Deutschlandfunk.
The system, named FCAS, comprising a fighter jet, drones and specialised communications software, was intended to replace the German Eurofighter and the French Rafale. Spain was also involved. The goal was a joint European high-performance combat aircraft that would replace both countries' air forces from 2040 onwards.
A symbol of European defence integration
On Monday the project ended in a disaster that had been foreseeable for months. The two aircraft manufacturers Dassault and Airbus argued over who would call the shots – political mediation failed. In March, Berlin together with Paris launched a last attempt at mediation between the industries, explicitly with a view to the upcoming budget decisions. In the end, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz was entirely right to pull the emergency brake.
