The British government has announced that the sale of energy drinks to children and young people under the age of 16 will be banned in England from April 2027.
According to the government, the ban covers all retail environments. This includes shops, vending machines and online shipping. The aim of the measure is to better protect children and young people from the health risks of highly caffeinated drinks.
The MP responsible for public health issues, Sharon Hodgson, said in a statement: "Koffeinreiche Energydrinks gehören nicht in die Hände von Kindern".
Hodgson also pointed to the prevalence of consumption among minors: "Wir wissen, dass Tausende Kinder in England sie täglich konsumieren, aber die Belege sind eindeutig, dass dies Angstzustände verursachen, ihren Schlaf und ihre Konzentration beeinträchtigen und sich nachteilig auf ihre Bildung auswirken kann."
