Catania, 09 July 2026
Mount Etna on the Italian island of Sicily erupted on 5 July 2026 and brought air traffic across large parts of the region to a standstill with an ash cloud several kilometres high.
According to a photo from 5 July 2026, lava flowed from Etna's crater as dense smoke rose. The eruption occurred on the east coast of Sicily, where Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe. Activity later intensified, with a cloud rising around 1.5 kilometres above the summit, as reported by the news agency APA.
Eruption and lava flows
The immediate consequences were felt at Catania airport. Because of the ash in the air, connections were cancelled or diverted to other airports. More than 600 flights were affected, according to the available data. Travellers had to expect sometimes significant delays and rebookings.
