The EU Commission is preparing a comprehensive reform of the European Emissions Trading System (ETS) and intends to present two packages with concrete measures on Friday.
The ETS as a central climate protection instrument
The European Emissions Trading System (ETS) is one of the central instruments of EU climate policy. Companies in the energy and industrial sectors as well as parts of aviation and maritime transport must purchase emission certificates, i.e. pollution rights. In order to achieve the EU's climate targets, the total number of ETS certificates is reduced each year and the free certificates for certain industrial sectors are being phased out.
