Brussels, June 30, 2026

The EU Commission released another tranche of 3.9 billion euros from a 90-billion-euro loan to Ukraine on Tuesday in Brussels, earmarked for the procurement of drones to defend against the Russian war of aggression.

Background of the tranche

According to the EU Commission, the disbursement follows an initial macro-financial assistance of 3.2 billion euros. Further payments are to follow in the coming days until the envisaged tranche of a total of 6 billion euros for drones is fully covered. With the new tranche, the disbursements to Ukraine financed from the joint loan increase accordingly.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen justified the move with the innovative capacity of the Ukrainian armed forces. "Der Einfallsreichtum der Ukraine ist der Schlüssel zu ihrem Erfolg im Widerstand gegen die groß angelegte Invasion Russlands. Diesen Einfallsreichtum wollen wir unterstützen", said von der Leyen. The investments served to protect the Ukrainian population and the security of the European continent.
