Several EU finance ministers have spoken out in favor of a windfall tax on the profits of oil companies in a joint letter, and according to "Spiegel," the letter was initiated at the behest of Lars Klingbeil.

The letter is addressed to the current Council Presidency and to the EU Commission. In it, according to the "Spiegel" report, the signatory ministers demand that companies generating excessive profits in the current energy crisis contribute more to financing the public good. The initiative is explicitly justified by the geopolitical situation and the persistently high energy costs in several member states.

Lars Klingbeil, Federal Finance Minister and SPD party chairman, reportedly drove the initiative forward and lobbied his EU counterparts for it. The weekly magazine "Spiegel" bases its account on its own information as well as on the ministers' correspondence. The Federal Ministry of Finance declined to comment on the reports when asked.
