The finance ministers of Portugal, Spain, Austria, Italy, Poland and Germany have addressed the Irish EU Council Presidency with a joint letter and called for a European windfall tax on energy corporations.
The concern is driven by growing discontent over the high profits of major oil companies amid the ongoing energy crisis. The ministers argue that parts of these profits do not result from normal market activity but from exploiting the current energy situation. A coordinated windfall tax is intended to skim off these surpluses and use them to relieve households as well as to finance investments in the green transition.
