Greens faction chairwoman Katharina Dröge has accused the federal government of looking the other way on fuel prices and failing to adequately protect consumers from excessive prices.
Speaking in Berlin, Dröge was critical of the current price development at German gas stations. She accused the government of ignoring the situation, even though many drivers were suffering under rising costs. In her assessment, policymakers must intervene far more forcefully to curb so-called price rip-offs.
The faction leader specifically demanded stricter controls and greater transparency in the fuel market. She pointed out that prices at German gas stations repeatedly rose faster than the crude oil price on the world market and fell more slowly. This pattern has long been criticized by consumer advocates and automobile clubs.
