Brussels, 13 July 2026
The EU foreign ministers met in Brussels on Monday to discuss, among other things, possible sanctions over Israel's settlement policy in the West Bank and the 21st sanctions package against Russia.
Dispute over trade restrictions against settlements
At the heart of the meeting was the question of whether further sanctions should be imposed in response to the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank. The EU Commission had prepared options for action for the deliberations. They include restrictions and bans on the import of goods from Israeli settlements.
Countries such as Spain, Ireland and Belgium are calling for tough sanctions over Israel's settlement policy. Several other EU states, including Ireland, the Netherlands and Spain, have also already imposed their own trade restrictions against Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories. The member states agree that Israel's settlement policy violates international law, but have so far been unable to agree on far-reaching sanctions.
