Ankara, 30 June 2026
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas travelled to Ankara on 30 June 2026 for bilateral talks with Turkish officials, including President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, ahead of a NATO summit scheduled for 7–8 July in the Turkish capital.
Kallas was accompanied by EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos and EU Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner, according to the report broadcast on Deutschlandfunk. The talks focused on bilateral relations between the European Union and Turkey. Turkey's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan also took part in the reception, the state news agency Anadolu reported.
After the meeting, Kallas wrote on X that Turkey is an important partner in the areas of security, migration, and energy, as well as an EU accession candidate. She said the country "leiste das Land einen bedeutenden Beitrag zum Schutz der Ostflanke der NATO" — makes a significant contribution to the protection of NATO's eastern flank. In her post, Kallas added that she had discussed with Erdogan Russia's war against Ukraine, the conflicts in the Middle East, and preparations for the NATO summit in Ankara.
