The European Parliament voted on Tuesday to lift the immunity of Harald Vilimsky, leader of Austria’s far-right FPÖ delegation, allowing Austrian authorities to investigate allegations of financial misconduct.
Background and Allegations
The decision follows a request by the Vienna Public Prosecutor's Office, which suspects Vilimsky of embezzlement and misuse of funds. The case centers on the financing of a security door installed in Vilimsky’s rental apartment, allegedly paid for by his party.
Vilimsky defended the measure, citing security concerns for his family. In a written statement to the Austrian Press Agency (APA), he argued, "Eine solche Maßnahme war deutlich kostengünstiger als jede dauerhafte Sicherheitskraft" ("Such a measure was significantly cheaper than any permanent security personnel").
