The European Union's foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas warned member states on Thursday against falling into a 'Russian trap' through premature public discussions on a Ukraine peace deal, urging instead for the bloc to build leverage for negotiations from a position of strength.
The Warning Against a 'Russian Trap'
Kallas delivered her stark warning during a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, where the bloc's approach to a potential peace process with Moscow dominated the agenda. Her comments come as various international actors float proposals for ending the war.
"Es ist eine Falle, in die Russland uns locken will," she said, according to sources familiar with the closed-door discussions. The Estonian diplomat stressed that publicly debating concessions before formal talks begin only serves the Kremlin's strategy.
