Strasbourg, 08 July 2026
The European Parliament has adopted a report in Strasbourg according to which Serbia's reforms on the path to the European Union are stagnating, and the country can only achieve its self-set goals – closing accession negotiations by early 2028 and joining by 2030 – at a significantly accelerated pace.
In the report adopted on Wednesday, the MEPs paint a nuanced picture of the situation in Serbia that is critical in its overall tendency. Tonino Picula, the Parliament's rapporteur for Serbia, said at a press conference in Strasbourg that the situation had further deteriorated. The polarization of Serbian society has deepened, reflecting citizens' frustration with corruption, lack of transparency, and cases of excessive use of force against demonstrators.
