European Parliament: Vote on US Trade Agreement on 6/16/2026

The background to the process is the so-called Turnberry Agreement, named after the place of negotiation. Negotiators from the EU Parliament and the member states had already agreed in May on the implementation of the so-called Turnberry Deal. The agreement provides for far-reaching adjustments to the mutual tariff regulations and had been intensively negotiated between the institutions in the preceding weeks.

Concessions and Tariff Regulations

Next Steps in the Council

After the vote in Parliament, the next step lies with the Council of the EU. If the plenary in Strasbourg approves as expected, the Council will formally decide on the agreement in the coming weeks. Observers assume that the Council's approval will be treated as a formality and that no further delays are to be expected.

The EU Commission had already presented the negotiation outcome in May as a balanced compromise. It pointed out that the Turnberry Deal would create legal certainty for European companies, which had hitherto suffered under the sword of Damocles of short-term changing US tariff policies. At the same time, the Commission acknowledged that the agreed 15 percent tariff on EU exports to the United States represents a considerable burden for numerous sectors.
