The European Union implemented a tariff agreement with the United States on Tuesday, allowing US industrial goods and lobster to enter the bloc duty-free while accepting US tariffs of up to 15 percent on most European exports.
Background
The new regulations, which took effect on Tuesday, put into practice the trade deal that EU negotiators concluded with US President Donald Trump the previous year. As of publication, US industrial goods and lobster may be imported into the EU without customs duties, while certain other agricultural products and seafood from the United States benefit from reduced tariffs or tariff quota arrangements designed to improve market access.
The agreement also required the EU to abolish its own tariffs on US industrial goods, a concession that drew criticism from European manufacturers but was accepted as the price of averting a broader trade conflict. According to the EU Commission, European consumers will benefit from better access to US imports and resulting price advantages, though the Commission provided no detailed estimate of how those savings would be distributed.
