The Eisenbahn- und Verkehrsgewerkschaft (EVG) warns that the entry of Italian long-distance rail provider Italo into the German market could cause at least 16 cities to lose their connections to ICE and IC services.

Italo plans to offer long-distance rail services in Germany starting in 2028. According to the Italian company's plans, it will initially operate the Munich-Frankfurt-Cologne-Dortmund and Munich-Berlin-Hamburg routes. This emerges from an analysis by the EVG, reported by the newspaper Bild am Sonntag. The news was broadcast on 14 June 2026 on the Deutschlandfunk programme.

The union fears that Deutsche Bahn could send fewer of its own high-speed trains on highly profitable routes if Italo enters the market. If lucrative tracks go to competitors, it would earn less money that could be used to cross-subsidise other long-distance connections. The Bahn subsidiary InfraGo allocates the tracks under the supervision of the Bundesnetzagentur (Federal Network Agency).
