An explosion in the Ras Laffan industrial area in Qatar killed 13 people and injured 66 others on Sunday evening, according to statements from Qatar and Qatar Energy.
According to Qatar Energy, the detonation occurred on Sunday evening during the commissioning of facilities in the Ras Laffan industrial area. "während der Inbetriebnahme von Anlagen im Industriegebiet Ras Laffan", the state-owned energy company stated. Shortly afterward, a fire broke out at the nearby Barsan gas supply facility, which the fire department reported was brought under control in the late evening hours.
Qatar's Saad al-Kaabi spoke of a "tragischen" ("tragic") incident and confirmed the death toll of 13. Those killed were Indian and Pakistani nationals. According to the Interior Ministry, 18 people were still considered missing the following day. The authority put the number of injured at 66.
