Berlin, 08 July 2026

According to US statements, the US armed forces carried out a series of intense attacks on targets in southern Iran during the night of 8 July 2026, responding to Iranian attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

Military operation

According to a US government official speaking to the broadcaster Axios, the attacks targeted Iranian air defense systems, coastal surveillance systems, and drone positions. The US military stated that the "powerful strikes" were intended to respond to the threat situation for civilian shipping. The responsible US regional command accused Iran of violating the ceasefire agreement.

At the same time, the US government had previously revoked a license for Iranian oil exports. The US Treasury Department had already reinstated a sanctions package against the Iranian oil sector. After the Treasury Department announced the revocation, oil prices rose by roughly three percent.

Iranian reactions and casualties

Iranian state media reported explosions in the south of the country. These were said to have been heard, among other places, in the port cities of Sirik and Bandar Abbas as well as on the island of Qeshm. There are currently no reports of casualties or damage. However, the Iranian broadcaster Press TV reported that several people had been injured.
