Falling Danube water level exposes sunken World War II ships in Serbia

The sinking of the ships dates back to 1944, when the German navy, retreating before the Red Army, destroyed a fleet in the area of the Iron Gate itself in order to impede the advance of the Allies. The wrecks had since lain partly below the waterline and became visible in greater numbers only as a result of the current low water.

Hydrology of the Danube near Prahovo

The stretch of the Danube near Prahovo is one of the hydrologically most demanding points of the river. In previous years, gauging stations had already registered a decline in water levels attributed to lower precipitation and changed runoff volumes in the catchment area. Authorities are monitoring the situation in order to continue ensuring safety for navigation.

According to experts' assessment, the recovered wrecks contain ammunition remnants and other munitions that must be properly disposed of during salvage operations. The responsible Serbian authorities are coordinating the work with international partners in order to ensure environmentally sound treatment.

EU Program for the Recovery of the Wrecks

The EU program for the removal of the wrecks is part of a broader project to clean up the Danube. According to official information, the remaining 14 wrecks are to be lifted and documented in stages, with the order depending on the condition of the objects and on the current hydrological situation.

For the residents of Prahovo, the low water means not only a visible sign of the historical heritage but also a burden on everyday life. The low water levels restrict navigation and affect the economy along the river, which is heavily dependent on the Danube as a transport route.

Experts point out that the exposure of the wrecks offers an opportunity to secure and study historical traces before they are fully recovered. At the same time, they caution to be careful: the structures are in some cases severely damaged and may become unstable if water levels continue to drop.

Impact on the Region

The state of the Danube is also being closely observed in other riparian states. Comparable low-water events have in recent years hampered navigation in several sections and raised ecological questions. The current situation in Serbia illustrates how historical legacies can suddenly become visible through environmental changes.

The Serbian authorities have meanwhile announced that they will step up safety precautions along the affected stretches of the Danube and inform the population about possible dangers from exposed wreck parts. The salvage operations are to continue as soon as weather conditions and water levels permit.
