In light of spring drought and heat, farmers in Germany and Austria are worried about the quantity and quality of this year's harvest, while producer prices are under pressure and production costs remain high.

The first combine harvesters are rolling onto the grain fields – but the mood in the fields is subdued. Due to drought and heat, farmers are worried about a good harvest, as the German Farmers' Association (Deutscher Bauernverband) announced. President Joachim Rukwied was scheduled to speak about the expectations at 10:30 a.m. on a field in Rangsdorf-Groß Machnow in Brandenburg, south of Berlin.

Situation in Germany: average harvest with large regional differences

Overall, the German Farmers' Association expects an average grain harvest, with very large regional differences. "Frühjahrstrockenheit und Hitzestress geben Anlass zur Sorge was Menge und Qualität der diesjährigen Ernte angeht", the association stated. Although there was brief recovery in May with rain, followed by renewed extreme heat in June, losses are still expected in many regions.
