Rescue Operation at the Gorge

Investigations into the Cause of the Accident

At the rescue organization's press conference, the dramatic operation in the Salzkammergut was described as a „belastender Einsatz". Even if the responders acted in a routine manner, every fatality on a via ferrata involves an increased emotional burden.

The Postalm via ferrata runs along steep rock faces and leads at several points over exposed passages with deep views into the gorge. At the entrance, transitions between rock and the gorge can be particularly tricky because the steel cable does not yet provide continuous support there.

According to the Salzburg Mountain Rescue service, the rescue chain functioned smoothly. Only a few hours passed from the alarm to the recovery from the gorge. The weather on the day of the accident was, according to police reports, dry and suitable for mountain hiking.

Safety on the Via Ferrata

The identity of the victim was confirmed by the Salzburg Mountain Rescue service. The deceased is, accordingly, a 23-year-old Czech citizen. The emergency services did not provide any further personal details, citing data protection regulations.

The alpine police have opened investigations and will reconstruct the sequence of events. Experts are to clarify whether the man's via ferrata set was used properly and whether there were possibly technical defects in the safety equipment at the entrance.

The Salzburg Mountain Rescue service and the alpine police pointed to the importance of complete via ferrata equipment. A helmet, a via ferrata set with a shock absorber, and suitable footwear are considered the minimum standard. Weatherproof clothing should also always be carried on tours in the Alps.

For the 2026 season, the Salzburg Mountain Rescue service has already recorded several operations on via ferratas in the Salzkammergut. The authorities ask mountaineers to plan their tours conscientiously and to realistically assess their own capabilities.

„Ein dramatisches Szenario, das uns zeigt, wie schnell selbst Routine-Touren am Berg zur Gefahr werden können", a spokesperson for the mountain rescue service concluded. The bereaved family of the victim will, according to the authorities, be supported by the Czech consulate.
