The incident occurred at around 7:00 a.m. in Biddeford, a small town of around 23,000 residents in the northeastern United States. According to the Maine Attorney General's Office, the ICE agents were seeking to enforce a deportation order against a specific individual. The 26-year-old Colombian then drove a vehicle toward an ICE agent, who opened fire.
Immigration rights aid organizations in Maine identified the deceased as a 26-year-old Colombian citizen. He had been in possession of a US residence and/or work permit, according to the Maine Immigrants' Rights Coalition. The authorities have not yet released the victim's name. The aid organization Presente Maine described the man as another fatality in a string of deadly ICE operations.
According to US Senator Angus King of Maine, an independent senator who caucuses with the Democrats, the person killed was not the individual the agents had originally been looking for. King said this to CNN, citing the US Department of Homeland Security. A spokesperson for King later clarified that the senator had received this information in a second phone call with Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin. Mullin is the successor to Kristi Noem, who was dismissed in March.
