The US immigration agency ICE will temporarily suspend most of its non-urgent vehicle checks at the direction of the US government after two fatal shootings of migrants during vehicle stops, according to multiple US media outlets reporting unanimously.
Background: Two deadly operations
The measure follows two incidents within a few days in which federal employees of the immigration agency ICE had fired their weapons during vehicle checks. On Monday, Colombian national Joan Sebastian Guerrero was killed by an ICE officer in Biddeford, Maine. A few days earlier, a Mexican national had been injured by gunfire during a similar check in Houston, Texas, and later died of his injuries in hospital.
