The Family's Account

The deceased was identified by his son, Ronaldo Salgado. In a video circulated from the hospital—showing a man lying on the ground, bleeding, and pleading for help—Ronaldo Salgado said he recognized his father's voice, speaking at a press conference. He said he learned of his father's death through social media reports—not from authorities or the hospital where he frantically searched for him.

On Facebook, the son wrote: "My father didn't deserve this." His "hard-working Mexican" father had been on his way to work at a construction site. Salgado had been in this country for nearly 35 years, working in construction to provide for me, my two brothers, and my mother, the post read.

According to his son, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was "on the verge of receiving a work permit." Ronaldo Salgado said his father was a family man who had been building homes in the region for 35 years to put his three sons through college and give his workers "the American Dream." "He believed that those who work hard are rewarded with good things."

First Fatal ICE Shooting Since January

The family describes the sequence of events fundamentally differently from the authorities. Salgado knew exactly how to behave during an immigration enforcement stop, the son said. If the officers had clearly identified themselves as such, he would have stopped and cooperated. His father had been terrified during the operation and had fled from vehicles unfamiliar to him.

His father had no criminal history, Ronaldo Salgado added. The family accuses the agency of failing to communicate in a timely or transparent manner.

The incident is the first fatal shooting by ICE personnel since the deaths of U.S. citizens Renee Good and Alex Pretti in January. This once again brings the question of the agency's use of lethal force into focus.

Calls for an Independent Investigation

The family, civil rights organizations, and Democratic politicians are demanding an independent investigation into the operation. Central to their demands is the release of body camera footage and all other evidence.
